Foods That Make Your Mood Better

Many of us have been taught to believe that comfort foods are bad and to be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this holds true. At times, comfort foods can be utterly nutritious and good for us to consume. There are several foods that, when you eat them, may better your mood. When you are feeling a little down and are in need of an emotional pick-me-up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, you may be surprised to learn, are wonderful at battling depression. Just be sure that you don’t throw away the yolk. When you want to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most vital part of the egg. Eggs, especially the yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can truly help you elevate your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–run better. Consume an egg and feel better!

Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all helpful for raising your mood. This is possible because these foods are rich in magnesium which promotes serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that dictates to your brain how you feel day in and day out. The higher your serotonin levels, the more pleasant you will feel. Not only that, nuts, in particular, are a great protein food source.

Cold water fish are great if you want to feel happier. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all high in omega-3 fats and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.

Grains can be great for fighting a terrible mood. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are fantastic at helping you feel happier. These grains can help you feel full for longer as well, which is a mood improver. It’s not hard to feel a little bit off when you are starving! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are not hard for your body to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.

Green tea is excellent for moods. You were just waiting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid called L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This helps improve your mental focus while calming the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you feel so much healthier. And now you know green tea can help you be happier too!

You can see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are terrible for you to feel better! Try some of these instead!
